Pre-Medical Clinical Internship Description: Are you ready to gain the clinical exposure you need to enhance your application for medical school, physician associate programs or graduate school in a medical-related discipline?
Wills Eye Hospital has a rich history of assisting motivated students in developing valuable skills needed to succeed in the field of medicine. Our staff will provide practical training and will guide you how to play an active role our patient care process. As a clinical intern, you will learn the responsibilities of an ophthalmic technician. You will work directly with our patients, which will allow you to strengthen your clinical skills. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to assist physicians with in-office procedures.
In this position you will: - Provide a variety of preliminary ocular assessment activities, including but not limited to, obtaining a complete and accurate medical history, visual acuity and stereo testing, lensometry, motility, applanation tonometry, pupil dilation, potential acuity meter testing and, and manifest refraction/autorefractometry.
- Demonstrate empathy for patient's needs along with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Oversee the efficient flow of patients through the eye clinic, assuring that resources are sufficient for scheduled patients and that they are directed appropriately.
- Prepare for patient appointments by reviewing and updating patient records prior to appointment.
- Obtain patient history, to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
- Assist with in-office procedures as appropriate and in accordance with scope of practice.
- Triage patients by determining which testing should be initiated, data collection, ensuring patients are comfortable while waiting, escorting patients from clinical area to check-out station and maintaining a smooth flow.
- Assists with screening, when necessary. Administer eye medications and instruct the patient in care and treatment of eye conditions.
- Answer patient questions, address concerns, follow up questions and/or refer patient questions to providers as appropriate.
- Other duties and projects as assigned by management.
- Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peers, managers and other members of the health care team
- Some administrative duties to include maintaining stock levels and cleanliness of exam rooms.

Position Requirements
Requirements: - Full-time applicants are preferred. Part-time applicants will be considered.
- At least 1 year commitment to the position.
- No prior medical experience needed as long as you are motivated to learn.
- You must be personable and respectful as you will be interacting with patients on a daily basis.
- Applicant must be at least a current college or university student.
- Must include your COVER LETTER, RESUME, any relevant test scores (GRE, MCAT) or date of future test (if applicable).
