Examples of Duties
Job Purpose
Under general supervision, plans, coordinates, and directs the maintenance, construction, and repair of athletic fields, parks, buildings, equipment and other recreation and parks facilities for an assigned region of the County or plans, directs, and supervises the daily operations of the Special Forces Unit within the Department of Recreation and Parks.
Essential Job Duties
* Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of maintenance workers within an assigned area of the County, and coordinates the activities of the Crew Chiefs and their crews.
* Makes frequent field inspections of the maintenance and repair work performed on parks, recreation centers, buildings, athletic fields and equipment, and similar recreational facilities.
* Plans, assigns, and supervises the Special Forces Unit.
* Oversees and inspects playground renovation and installation and the maintenance and repair of regional irrigation, lighting, and other facility operational systems.
* Plans, designs, and coordinates the paving of roadways, paths, and trails in County parks.
* Supervises the removal, installation, and water testing of water fountains.
* Supervises and participates in the care of trees and shrubs, and the construction and repair of picnic tables, benches, play equipment, and other such equipment.
* Responsibility for all maintenance equipment and material assigned to the area, and seeks new innovative approaches to maintenance.
* Provides technical assistance to Crew Chiefs as needed.
* Manages shop budget and inventory.
* Maintains records of labor and material costs.
* Approves attendance, work schedules, and time records for an assigned area
* Conducts management efficiency studies.
* Keeps superior informed of the progress of the maintenance program in the area.
* Prepares written recommendations for the department administration.
* Participates in staff meetings.
* Consults with residents of the area regarding facility-related issues.

Qualifications
Training and Experience
Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent;
Plus
Six years' experience in recreation and parks maintenance, two years of which were in a supervisory capacity.
Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
Additional education in recreation, management, or a related field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required nonsupervisory experience.

* Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation and parks construction, maintenance, and repair.
* Thorough knowledge of the tools and equipment used in recreation and parks maintenance. Knowledge of supervisory procedures and methods.

* Skill in supervising recreation and parks construction, maintenance, and repair.
* Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise recreation and parks construction, maintenance, and repair for a region.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
